3/30/2018 0 Comments February blog updateThis month we worked on embroidery and my piece was a set of clouds in different colors with different stitches. we began the unit by putting a piece of cloth into our hoop in order to make a space where we could practice stitching. I started with the running stich and eventually learned back stitch, box stitch, french knot, etc. when i began my own project, i got a medium sized needle that would make string insertion a bit easier. then, i drew out my clouds with pencil onto the sheet and began my project. i don't have a picture of the final one, but i have a picture of the inspiration i went off of attached below.

3/26/2018 0 Comments January blog updateThis month we worked on printmaking. For my printing project i made a penguin on a printing block. i STARTED BY GOOGLING LINOLEUM CARVINGS TO GET IDEAS AND I ENDED UP GETTING MY INSPIRATION ONLINE AND TRIED TO MAKE A GOOD COPY OF WHAT I SAW FOR THE ORIGINAL ONE. i LEARNED HOW TO USE DIFFERENT SIZED CARVING TOOLS IN ORDER TO MANIPULATE MY PIECE TO MAKE IT HOW I WANTED IT TO LOOK. ONCE I GOT MY GOOD SHAPE, I COLORED IT ALL BLACK AND PRINTED IT ONTO ANOTHER SHEET OF PAPER. at first it came out with a few extra lines ON IT, so i had to go back and re-carve where the extra lines came from. AT THE END OF THE UNIT, I ENDED UP BEING PRETTY SUCCESSFUL BY CHOOSING A QUICK PROJECT FOR MY FIRST CARVING. bY CHOOSING ONE THAT I KNEW WAS going to be fast, i was able to finish soon enough to correct my mistakes. i included pictures of my piece and lizzys piece with before and afters to show the process of making one of these.

Since it’s near the holiday season, there was a lot of inspiration for something to do / make with our clay. It was hard when it took a long time for things to fire because then I ended up having tons of pieces racking up and eventually I ended up losing track of them. I wish we could do this unit longer because I had a lot more ideas for things to do, but I’m happy with my pieces included in this blog post. Not included in here are the two bowls and many pinch pots I made that vanished.
I’ve really enjoyed art class so far because I have been able to receive guidance from Mrs. Haggerty while also being able to create my own original art. In the beginning I worked a lot off of other people’s art and online inspiration but now I’ve learned to do my own pieces that are inspired by my own pictures or thoughts. Through this process, many skills have been developed as my work has become more independent and unique to me. For example in my illuminated letter, I started by observing everyone else’s work and ideas and eventually I put my own thoughts and parts of my life into the letter. In the painting bootcamp, I did a lot of my own original work and when it wasn’t working out, I moved on and started on something else. Finally, I liked doing the reflections because it gave me a good look at other people's perspectives on my art.
I've had a really good experience so far in art. We've been able to get a lot done in a short period of time so I have a good amount of artwork to look back on already. Some of the things we have done were difficult in the beginning like the hands, but the more we worked with and developed them, the better and easier they became. My favorite project so far was the upside down man because we weren't given anything specific to draw, but instead we just had to retrace lines onto paper. I am excited for the new projects and units.
